Activity Center
The purpose of our Activity Centre is to provide programming and services which achieve the following goals:
- Assist program participants to learn new skills and abilities
- Assist in retention of current skills and abilities
- Provide a safe, nurturing and respectful environment
- Provide the opportunity for social networking and interaction
Life Skills Development
We work with program participants to teach and encourage such skills as personal hygiene, light housekeeping, cooking, gardening, etc. Many of our participants reside within group homes or the family home, and as such, are able to transfer these skills to their residences.
Education
We focus on educating and informing in a variety of areas – safety both in and out of the home (traffic considerations, bullying, who is a friend); personal boundaries, interacting in social settings and with strangers, manners, sharing, etc. We bring in presenters from the City Police to speak to our participants and form bonds with them, as well as volunteers from other organizations within our community.
Personal Planning
We strive to learn the wants, needs and desires of each individual, and incorporate these into our daily activities and program planning. Meetings are held regularly with all stakeholders – family, staff – residential and vocational, funding partners, etc.
Recreation
We promote and encourage a variety of activities, both ‘work’ related and fun in order to provide a stimulating and creative environment. This can range from arts and crafts, field trips around town, entertainment brought in and anything else that the participants show an interest in. We find as our participant’s age, they enjoy and want the ‘activity’ based programming, and we continue to make adjustments to accommodate this shift in our demographics.
